Region

Champagne

The relatively cool climate of Champagne in the North-East of France became the world’s first region to produce sparkling wine in large quantities. Today, it has become a synonym of the highest possible product quality. Only sparkling wines from the region of Champagne may be given the name of Champagne. Like Bordeaux and Burgundy wines, they serve as worldwide examples of excellent product quality. The roots of the sturdy vines delve deep into the soil consisting of calcareous sediments and thus providing the best conditions for water supply. The best locations are on the slopes of the hills quite typical for the landscape. Where an entire array of other vines used to be cultivated alongside Champagne, the region today hosts mainly Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.
