Region

Douro

North of Porto, the Douro valley extends for almost 100 kilometres from East to West. It is one of the oldest legally demarcated winegrowing regions of the world. Its boundaries having been defined already in 1756, it benefits from warm, dry summers and cool winters. Steep terraces hewn into the black schistose rock reach altitudes of 700 m a.s.l.: Here around 100 of the vine types indigenous to Portugal flourish. Originally these were used mainly to produce port wine. Only from the 1950s onward did the dense, fruity red wines distilled from grapes on the upper, sun-spoilt terroirs on the Douro gain traction.

Producer/Brand

Quinta do Tedo

At the beginning of the 1990s, wine marketing specialist Vincent Bouchard who hails from the renowned Burgundy family Bouchard Père et Fils and his wife Kay realised their dream of establishing their own winery in the Douro valley on the 250-year-old Quinta do Tedo estate. Situated on the classic granite soils of Douro Alto, Quinta do Tedo is flanked to the West by the River Tedo and to the North by the River Douro. The vineyard has the highest classification of the Douro, it is a class A location and thus one could say belongs to the grand crus of Douro. Primarily Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão are cultivated here.
